Animation now dominates the world’s visual culture: Japan is one of the countries that has produced the highest quality works. Animated works were created early in the history of cinema as a unique form of expression that creates movement on screen by layering still images without relying on live-action filming, and as it developed into a major industry in various countries, original creators have been active in the field.
This year marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of cinema, and NFAJ will comprehensively trace the lineage of animated films from a wide range of eras and countries, from early works to contemporary new works, using materials such as its extensive poster collection. We will look back on the great trends that this film culture has shaped, focusing on Hollywood cartoon films, distinctive masterpieces from European countries, and of course, Japan’s proud animation masterpieces.
