As a young leading director of the “Polish School,” Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016) blew a new wind into the film world with Kanal (1957) and Ashes and Diamonds (1958), and later released Man of Marble (1977) and Man of Iron (1981) in opposition to the socialist regime of the time, while also being an eloquent narrator of Poland’s history and building a magnificent narrative world by frequently adapting masterpieces of Polish literature.
This exhibition was curated by Polish experts from a valuable collection of materials, mainly from the collection of the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology, that were born from Wajda’s more than 60-year career, and is the first overseas tour of a project that was held at the National Museum in Krakow in 2019. This exhibition in NFAJ will introduce Wajda’s images as an artist and the world of his work, with an original chapter showing the deep ties he built with Japan.
