Starting with his independent 8mm film production, and ever since his commercial debut, Something Like It (1981), director Morita Yoshimitsu (1950-2011) has been an independent filmmaker who has provided a constant stream of popular works to Japanese cinema since the 1980s. He broke down the boundaries of genres such as comedy, idol films, literary films, romantic films, courtroom dramas, horror films, mystery films, and jidaigeki (period dramas), and in works such as The Family Game (1983) and The Black House (1999), he skillfully incorporated the social conditions of the time, while incorporating different styles and unexpected direction in each work, which sometimes caused such a huge reaction that they became a social phenomenon.
This exhibition will feature these diverse works, as well as the director’s own treasured items and the props used in the films, and will present an image of a director full of ideas and originality, while also referring to the recent global trend of reevaluation of his work.
